MICHAEL RAKOWER
Michael, a native New Yorker, joined the AFKPL team after working in the Prosecutor's Office of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Tanzania. In 2005, Michael established a solo law practice in midtown Manhattan, following his federal clerkship on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before working at the ICTR, Michael was an associate at Latham & Watkins, working both in corporate finance and litigation.
Michael's work with the AFKPL continues his passion for human rights. At Latham, he obtained asylum for refugees subjected to torture and political repression. Following the attack on the World Trade Center, Michael represented small business owners as they rehabilitated their businesses in the wake of destruction. His representation in 2003 of an abused prisoner led to a large settlement with the City of New York.
Michael received his JD in 1999 from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served on the Managing Board of the Virginia Journal of International Law. He graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993.
