Contract Signing

On Wednesday, June 27, 2001 the Rotary Club of Kigali-Virunga hosted a memorable event at its weekly meeting - held every Wednesday at 7:00pm at the Hotel Umubano -- the signing a contract for the construction of Rwanda's first ever public library. Gerald Mpyisi signed the contract on behalf of the Rotary Club of Kigali-Virunga and Ratomir Hruska signed on behalf of BALKAN S.A.R.L. The contract is based on FIDIC standards.

What makes this signing unique is the fact that it is not between the government of Rwanda and an international donor -- this library is being built by private Rwandans and their friends in the international community -- albeit with strong support from the government.

Now that the contract is signed, the Rotary Club of Kigali-Virunga must pay advance fees for the design, consulting services, and construction costs. We are proud to announce that we are ready to make these payments (totaling $100,000 or 44 million Rwandan francs). This is due to the generosity of donors from Rwanda and around the world who have already supported the dream of building Rwanda's first public library.
